Leonard Nimoy- He lived and prospered
On a personal note Leonard Nimoy was someone I greatly admired and I feel the world has lost a great human being with his passing. Though he is most famous for being Mr. Spock from Star Trek. It is what he did when interacting his with fans and pursuing his for encouraging women to embrace the power of femininity that make me admire him as a person and not just a famous persona. For example published a photography book called, The Full Body Project, where he wrote:
“The average American woman weighs 25 percent more than the models selling the clothes. There is a huge industry built up around selling women ways to get their bodies closer to the fantasy ideal. Pills, diets, surgery, workout programs. . . . The message is ‘You don’t look right. If you buy our product, you can get there.’”
He also did seemingly small, but powerful things like writing an article in 1968 for teen magazine FAVE to encourage a young fan, who wrote that she felt like an outcast because her parents were an interracial. She wrote to him saying she was not accepted by whites or blacks, and often called a “half-breed.” He wrote back to her in the article stating the importance of knowing one’s own worth, to stay true to yourself, and that it takes courage. To read the little girls letter and Nimoy’s response see: Buzzfeed: Spock’s Advice To A Teenage Girl Will Make You Cry. We will miss you Mr. Nimoy. May your legacy of love, peace, and encouragement never die.
