Women Entrepreneurs & Federal Contracts
As a Dallas based woman lawyer many of my clients are women owned businesses. I can tell you that starting your own business is a passion and a dream that take a lot of really hard work and dedication. So, it really disturbed me to hear that in the 20 years that the U.S. Government set the goal of awarding 5% of government contracts to women owned business it has NEVER met this goal. No, you didn’t read that incorrectly. NEVER. 5%? Really? That is shocking. This recent story by American Public Media’s Market Place: Why Women Lag in Winning Federal Contracts, points to lack of outreach, bureaucracy and an overly complicated application process. However, the story itself gives an anecdotal story of one woman, whose business got a Federal contract without even applying, which to me says getting these contracts might be more about who is advocating for you. So, maybe we need to get more of those responsible for awarding these contracts better acquainted with women with capable businesses so they stop awarding these contracts to same… well “Good Old BOYS.”
